AMO

The American Mathematics Olympiad (AMO) is open to Primary 2 to 6, Secondary 1 to 4, and Junior College 1/2 students (Grades 2 to 12) worldwide.
Unlike traditional mathematics examinations, AMO encourages students to develop mathematical reasoning, problem-solving strategies, and critical thinking through challenging and engaging questions. The competition introduces important mathematical concepts and encourages students to apply their knowledge creatively beyond routine classroom exercises.
The contest duration is 90 minutes, with a separate examination for each grade level. Each paper consists of 25 questions across multiple-choice and open-ended sections, totaling 100 points. Calculators are not permitted. Participants can earn awards, medals, and certificates, while their performance reports help identify strengths and areas for improvement.
AMO 2026 is open to Primary 2 to 6, Secondary 1 to 4, and Junior College 1 & 2 students (Grades 2 to 12).
AMO is divided into the following grade categories, with a separate examination for each level:
-
Primary 2–4 (Grades 2–4): Arithmetic, statistics, geometry, measurement, patterns, logic, and non-routine problem-solving.
-
Primary 5–6 (Grades 5–6): Arithmetic, statistics, geometry, measurement, word problems, and advanced logical reasoning.
-
Secondary 1 (Grade 7): Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, graphs, statistics, and non-routine problem-solving.
-
Secondary 2 (Grade 8): Algebra, geometry, graphs, measurement, Pythagoras’ theorem, statistics, and logical reasoning.
-
Secondary 3–4 (Grades 9–10): Algebra, geometry, graphs, trigonometry, statistics, probability, and complex problem-solving.
-
Junior College 1–2 (Grades 11–12): Advanced algebra, geometry, graphs, trigonometry, statistics, probability, and non-routine problem-solving.
The competition consists of 25 questions to be completed in 90 minutes, with 15 multiple-choice questions and 10 open-ended questions. The total score is 100 points, with no marks deducted for incorrect answers. Calculators are not permitted.
