SASMO
SASMO is open to all Primary 1 to 6, Secondary 1 to 4 and JC1/2 students (Grades 1 to 12 students.
Time given for contest is 90 minutes. Each level has a differentiate examination primarily on curriculum-based knowledge, SASMO emphasizes problem-solving skills, creative thinking, and mathematical reasoning.
The competition challenges students to think beyond rote memorization and apply mathematical concepts in innovative ways. This approach aligns with modern educational philosophies that prioritize critical thinking and analytical skills over mere computation.
SASMO is organized into six distinct grade categories, ensuring that questions are appropriately challenging for each age group:
Primary 1 & 2: Introduction to problem-solving with visual and pattern-based questions
Primary 3 & 4: Intermediate level focusing on logical reasoning and basic geometry
Primary 5 & 6: Advanced primary mathematics with emphasis on algebra and complex problem-solving
Secondary 1 & 2: Pre-algebra and algebraic thinking
Secondary 3 & 4: Advanced algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
Secondary 5 & 6 (Junior College): Pre-calculus and advanced mathematical concepts
The competition typically consists of 25 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 90 minutes. Questions range from straightforward computational problems worth 1-2 points to complex, multi-step problems worth 3-5 points. This structure rewards both accuracy and the ability to tackle challenging problems.
